So far, the lineup for movie releases this May looks promising and interesting in many aspects. We got thriller, action, black comedy, and horror movies that will be out this month. Here are some of my picks that I cannot help but be excited for, so let’s dive deep into them!
5. The Devil Wears Prada 2
Ever since the sequel to Devil Wears Prada was announced, fans have been girding their loins. The sequel is here after almost 20 years, and while it’s not the same, the movie has a lot to offer.
Set almost two decades later, the movie will explore Andy Sach’s journey as she ventures out to help her former employer and boss, Miranda Priestley. Runway is on the verge of bankruptcy, and both she and Andy can salvage the company along with Nigel.
It features the iconic cast, including Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci. The movie also has Lady Gaga, Donatella Versace, and Ciara in cameos. It looks stunning, and I’m all here for it!
The Devil Wears Prada 2 releases on 1st May 2026.
4. Deep Water
Ben Kingsley and Aaron Eckhart in the same movie? Sign me up, I would say! Deep Water would give you the first impression that you’re watching Megalodon, but it’s not quite like it. The movie is laden with jump scares and does follow the creature feature tropes: air crash, people flying out, survival, and hopelessness. Except there are no scientists, but two pilots who must work in tandem with the survivors to escape from sharks.
Deep Water releases on 1st May 2026.
3. Mortal Kombat II
After almost 3 years of waiting, Mortal Kombat II is finally here. We all know how the movie was delayed because of Sag AFTRA, but as they say, good things come to those who wait. Mortal Kombat II will explore the journey of Johnny Cage, played by Urban, and many other Earth’s fighters to battle against the tyrant Shao Kahn, played by Martin Ford.
Oh, and not to mention, Hiroyuki Sanada will reprise his role as Scorpion in the movie, and I cannot help but feel excited about it!
Mortal Kombat II releases on 8th May 2026.
2. The Mandalorian & Grogu
The Mandalorian & Grogu unveil a stellar cast featuring Pedro Pascal, Jeremy Allen White, and Sigourney Weaver! It will expand on Mandalorian’s adventures with his apprentice Grogu.
While the Galactic Empire witnessed the fall, imperial warlords are trying to stir up unrest, and this is precisely what the Mandalorian stands up against. His conviction and strength, paired with Grogu’s powers, will determine the outcome of it all!
Another reason why I’m so excited about this movie is that it brings craftsmanship into filmmaking. The crew used both puppetry and animatronics to bring Grogu to life, and it is commendable!
The Mandalorian & Grogu releases on 22 May 2026.
1. Backrooms
Backrooms isn’t your bog standard horror movie, no. It’s offbeat, especially with how it plays with the mind, per se. The movie stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as Clark, who discovers a backroom in his store and its human curiosity at its worst. He ventures out and gets trapped, and what follows is his therapist trying to rescue him. She gets entangled in the horror as well.
Inspired by Creepypasta stories, Kane Parsons uses liminal spaces to lay out the landscape for the horror story, and he does so marvellously, as seen in the trailer. The use of 90s-style disposable camera footage is the cherry on the cake.
Backrooms releases on May 29th 2026.
