There have been many speculations regarding the new Planet of the Apes movie. Is it a sequel? Is it a spinoff? Is it a reboot? There were many questions, and it seems that we finally have a sneak peek as to what the movie might be about. So let’s unpack this!
A new Planet of the Apes movie confirmed
As confirmed by Deadline, the new Planet of the Apes movie isn’t a sequel or a reboot. It is a completely new movie set within the franchise with a different plot altogether. Matt Shakman will be directing this new film, as sources confirmed. He is known for directing The Fantastic Four: First Steps and WandaVision.
Josh Friedman will be writing the script of the movie, as the source confirmed. Both Friedman and Shakman worked together on The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
Friedman also wrote the script for the 2024 movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It is interesting since the movie took a different direction than expected, and he did shed light on this.
In an interview with Hollywood Insider in 2024, he spoke about how the movie meandered from the timeline, saying, “What I found like over the years I realized is like the Apes fans are pretty fanatic so I think it’s been a long time from the last movie to this movie and I think I will be really interested to see how they feel about it it’s a slightly different tone it’s a different kind of scope of movie it’s like things are in a radically different part of the world or time time wise.”
Both Shakman and Friedman are established filmmakers and directors in their field. While Shakman started as a child actor, his career branched out into directing and filmmaking.
As for Josh Friedman, he has assisted James Cameron as a screenplay writer for Avatar and Terminator.
Planet of the Apes is one of the most popular and celebrated movie franchises based on the 1963 novel by Pierre Boulle. It has numerous adaptations, and as for the upcoming movie, the plot details as well as the filming status remain undisclosed for now.
