After the 2021 live-action adaptation, PBS Kids is gearing up for another reboot of America’s most beloved children’s book series, Clifford the Big Red Dog. The adventure of eight-year-old Emily Elizabeth and her loving giant red-furred titular dog will hit the streaming platform next year, concluding in 26 episodes. Here’s what we know about the project so far.
Clifford the Big Red Dog set for major 2027 animation reboot
Based on Norman Bridwell’s 91-book series with the same title, Clifford the Big Red Dog is heading for another animated chapter. Brown Bag Films is leading the show, which will feature 29 episodes with a runtime of 11 minutes each. For those not in the know, the books first arrived in 1963. For over half a century, the legacy these stories have created in children’s literature truly stands out.
And Sara DeWitt, PBS Kids and Education’s senior vice president and general manager, echoed the same sentiment while weighing on the project. “Clifford has been a favorite with children and families for generations, and we can’t wait to reintroduce this Big Red Dog to PBS Kids audiences across the country,” she said.
“Giving kids the skills, knowledge, and encouragement they need to connect with others and sustain relationships is more vital than ever to prepare them for success in school and life.” Shortly after its creation, Clifford became the official mascot of Scholastic Corporation, which publishes and distributes educational material to schools, parents, and other institutions.
“Since he first filled a page, Clifford the Big Red Dog captured the heart of Scholastic, and his adventures connected with readers everywhere, creating remarkable, global recognition,” said Iole Lucchese, Scholastic chief strategy officer and president of Scholastic Entertainment. “This new series builds on Clifford’s most endearing traits through fresh storytelling, creating new opportunities for audiences and marking an exciting step in the continued growth of the franchise.”
Additionally, PBS Kids is also joining forces with 9 Story Media Group for an interactive Clifford game, whose release will coincide with the 2027 series. The game will focus on a more goofy version of the titular character, aiming to boost its popularity. Most importantly, the creators plan to keep Clifford’s “warmth” intact, given the long-standing emotional connection with the audience. Are you pumped about the project?
