The Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn is back with another psychological thriller, Her Private Hell. Starring Sophie Thatcher in the lead role, the exciting project will grace the big screens on July 24, 2026. Also, this marks Refn’s first feature film after his hiatus of nearly ten years. So, without further delay, let’s get into the nitty-gritty of the film.
Nicolas Winding Refn upcoming film will premiere at Cannes
Her Private Hell follows a miserable young woman who has lost her father to a futuristic city covered in a thick blanket of a mysterious mist. As the fog spreads, the protagonist comes to know about the existence of a deadly presence. The movie will be heading for a world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in the Out of Competition section.
“As a strange mist engulfs a futuristic metropolis and unleashes an elusive, deadly presence, a troubled young woman sets out in search of her father,” the official synopsis of the film reads. “In the course of her quest, her fate intersects with that of an American GI engaged in a desperate journey to pull his daughter out of Hell.”
The film features Sophie Thatcher in the lead role. She’ll be sharing the screen with Charles Melton, Dougray Scott, Diego Calva, and Kristine Froseth. This marks Refn’s first feature film since The Neon Demon, ending nearly a decade-long gap in theatrical filmmaking. While on his break from directing feature films, Refn made two web series: Too Old to Die Young for Amazon Prime Video and Copenhagen Cowboy for Netflix.
Meanwhile, the film is being backed by Neon, the studio behind multiple Palme d’Or winners. Refn has described his movie as an original story filled with “glitter, s–, and violence.” In typical Refn fashion, fans can expect neon-soaked visuals and slow-burning storytelling. The film has been shot primarily in Tokyo and Copenhagen.
Additionally, this marks the first time Sophie Thatcher, Kristine Froseth, and Havana Rose Liu will all appear on the same project. Interestingly, Froseth has previously worked with both co-stars separately—she starred alongside Thatcher in When the Streetlights Go On and shared the stage with Liu in the Off-Broadway play All-Nighter. This shared history could add an extra layer of familiarity to their performances. Are you excited to watch Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming psychological thriller?
