The iconic Russo Brothers will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Avengers: Doomsday, set to release on December 18, 2026. They have previously directed four Marvel films: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. In a recent interview, the duo made their picks in the long-running Captain America vs. Iron Man debate.
Anthony and Joe choose different sides in the burning Marvel debate
During a recent interview with Comic Book Resources to mark the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, Anthony and Joe Russo were asked the question Marvel fans have debated for years: Are they team Captain America or team Iron Man? Joe gave an interesting answer, stating that the divide ultimately comes down to “team institution” versus “team rebel.”
And guess what? He actually leans toward the rebel side, effectively siding with Captain America. “At the end of the day, are you team institution [or] are you team rebel? So, I think I’m team rebel,” Joe replied. Meanwhile, Anthony jokingly responded while pointing at a red ribbon he was wearing, saying, “I’m wearing my colors.” Fans interpreted the remark as him choosing Iron Man, since red is commonly associated with Tony Stark’s armor.
The debate stems from the ideological conflict between Captain America and Iron Man in Civil War. Steve Rogers opposed government oversight through the Sokovia Accords, believing institutions could become corrupted, politically manipulated, or morally compromised. His views were heavily influenced by the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, in which Hydra secretly infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D.
On the other hand, Tony Stark supported the Sokovia Accords, which would place the Avengers under United Nations oversight. He believed superheroes should be accountable to governments instead of acting independently. Stark’s reasoning was shaped by the massive collateral damage caused during previous battles involving the Avengers.
Interestingly, the timing of their quotes has sparked renewed fan interest because the Russos are finally making their MCU comeback with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Robert Downey Jr. will return to the franchise as Doctor Doom after Iron Man sacrificed himself in the final battle against Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. While the Russo brothers have picked their heroes, we’d like to know which side you’re on. Tell us in the comments.
