Rachel Zegler has been making major strides in Hollywood as well as the theatre. The 24-year-old actress already has a Golden Globe Award to her name for her performance as María in West Side Story in 2022. Now, she has bagged a prestigious award in the theater world for the West End revival of Evita.

Zegler wins prestigious Olivier award for debut theatre performance

The Snow White actor has bagged one of the theater world’s biggest honors, winning Best Actress in a Musical at the Laurence Olivier Awards 2026. She played the leading protagonist, Eva Perón. It is quite a significant achievement, considering that it was her West End debut performance. The award ceremony was held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, celebrating the best of British theatre.

The stage musical is based on Eva Perón, Argentina’s iconic First Lady, in a bold revival directed by Jamie Lloyd at the London Palladium. The production was a reimagining of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most iconic musical of the same name, focusing heavily on performance intensity rather than spectacle.

Zegler’s performance was headline-worthy, as it was one of those rare moments when theater became more accessible to the public. At one point, in what can only be described as unconventional, the actor stepped out onto the theater’s balcony and sang live to crowds gathered outside on the street. The paying audience inside the theater watched the performance via livestream.

It was one of the most talked-about theater moments of the year, which drew hundreds of passersby nightly as the actress delivered a powerful rendition of “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina”.

“It was the honor of a lifetime singing to the people on Argyll Street eight times a week. I can’t believe I got so lucky to sing in front of thousands of you,” the US actor said while receiving the award, adding, “It’s so beautiful that Jamie Lloyd made such an accessible moment of theater for people to walk by and witness something really, really cool.”

The young actress’s win for her debut performance puts her in the elite company of theater actors who have won the highest honor in British theater. Safe to say, she is balancing film and stage performance exceptionally well, giving her the much-needed credibility to seize more opportunities in theater and other live performances, along with acting gigs in Hollywood.
