Netflix sets release date for Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson film Voicemails for Isabelle

Netflix unveiled the first look at Voicemails for Isabelle, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson.

Netflix just dropped the first look at the upcoming rom-com titled Voicemails for Isabelle, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson. The movie is set to premiere on the streaming platform on June 19. So, without further delay, let’s discuss the latest developments surrounding the film.

Voicemails for Isabelle is also a “love story” between two sisters

Directed and written by Leah McKendrick, the story follows Jill (Deutch), a woman struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister Isabelle. As a coping mechanism, she keeps leaving voicemails on Isabelle’s old phone number. She rants about her chaotic life in San Francisco, but little does she know that the “number is reassigned without her knowledge, and an elusive Austin, Texas, real estate agent (Robinson) begins receiving the hilariously confessional messages,” as per the official synopsis.

In an interview with PEOPLE, Robinson emphasized that the film was also a love story between two sisters, just as much as it was between the two romantic leads. He further stated that Jill’s character is grieving precisely because she loves her sister. “Grief and love are not opposites,” Robinson told the magazine while weighing in on the film’s theme.

“They say that grief is just love with nowhere to go. Jill’s capacity for one informs her capacity for the other. This is just as much of a love story between Jill and Isabelle as it is a love story between Jill and Wes [his character],” the actor added.

Deutch, who plays the female lead, revealed that she had known Robinson since her teenage years and that working with him was a delight. “I have known Nick since we were teenagers and have admired him as an actor for even longer,” she told PEOPLE, adding, “Getting to finally work with him was such a joy. I couldn’t adore him more as a human and actor.”

Safe to say, this longtime friendship between the pair before filming will definitely translate into their onscreen chemistry. Meanwhile, the movie also appears heavily inspired by beloved rom-com classics such as Sleepless in Seattle, Notting Hill, and Jerry Maguire. In fact, McKendrick has promised it to be a “fluttery romance and comedic hijinks.”

The supporting cast includes Nick Offerman, Lukas Gage, Harry Shum Jr., Ciara Bravo, Megan Danso, Toby Sandeman, and Gil Bellows. McKendrick also revealed that the film was inspired by her own relationship with her younger sister, which forms the emotional core beneath the film’s rom-com charm.
