Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are currently on their Australia tour for a series of public engagements. They recently visited Batyr, a youth mental health organization in Melbourne. During a discussion with young mental health advocates there, she shared a personal example of resilience in the context of social media bullying.
Meghan Markle says she was the most “trolled” person in the world
On the third day of their Australia tour, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex went to Batyr at Swinburne University of Technology. Batyr focuses on early intervention, education, and stigma reduction. It runs school, university, and workplace programs to teach young people about mental health, addressing issues like anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts, with a primary focus on peer-to-peer storytelling.
During a discussion with a group of young people at the organization, she recounted that she has also faced instances of bullying and trolling online but has come out of it stronger through resilience.
“For now, 10 years, every day for 10 years, I have been bullied and attacked. And I was the most trolled person in the entire world,” she said, adding, “Now, I’m still here.”
Elaborating on her point, she stated that social media is “predicated on cruelty” and “not incentivized to stop,” suggesting that “strength” is required to persevere in such a situation.
“And when I think of all of you and what you’re experiencing, I think so much of that is having to realize that you know that industry, that billion-dollar industry, that is completely anchored and predicated on cruelty to get clicks, that’s not going to change. So you have to be stronger than that,” she further stated, as per reports from PA Media.
Meghan Markle has been on the receiving end of a sustained period of online bullying ever since her relationship with Prince Harry became public in 2016. She faced intense global scrutiny after their royal wedding, which only intensified after they officially stepped down from royal duties in 2020. The Duchess of Sussex has also received significant racist and sexist abuse online, with Markle previously stating that she experienced serious mental health struggles during her pregnancy.
