There’s been a major casting reshuffle for the upcoming season of The White Lotus. Helena Bonham Carter exited the project during the early stages of filming, as the role no longer aligned with the show’s creative direction. Now, new reports suggest that Laura Dern will join the cast following her exit.

As per Variety, Laura Dern will feature in Season 4 of The White Lotus. Following Helena Bonham Carter’s departure from the show, Dern has been roped in, but she won’t be playing the role Bonham Carter was originally set to portray. Instead, she will take on a new character developed by the show’s creator, Mike White.

This isn’t the first time that White and Dern have worked together on projects linked to HBO. She had an uncredited voice cameo in The White Lotus Season 2 and previously collaborated on the HBO series Enlightened, which Dern co-created and starred in. They also worked together on the film Year of the Dog, which White wrote and directed, with Dern appearing in a supporting role.

HBO had confirmed earlier that Bonham Carter’s character “did not align once on set” and hence had to be rewritten and recast. “With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” a statement from an HBO spokesperson read.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten, and will be recast in the coming weeks,” it further stated.

Season 4 follows a new group of White Lotus guests and staff over the course of a week during the Cannes Film Festival, set along the French Riviera. “Hotels featured include the Airelles Château de la Messardière as the White Lotus du Cap and the Hôtel Martinez as the White Lotus Cannes. In addition to Cannes, the season will film in St. Tropez, Monaco, and Paris, though the story will remain set in the Côte d’Azur,” the official description of the show reads.

Set in upscale resorts, the series tracks the interactions between affluent visitors and the employees serving them, using their stay to examine class imbalance, influence, and excess—gradually exposing the cracks that lie beneath their well put-together holiday facades.
