Antony Starr is doing promotions for the fifth and final season of The Boys, which is currently airing on Amazon Prime. It is a show known for the sudden and brutal deaths of even major characters, not hesitating to remove fan favorites if it serves the story. In a recent interview, Starr said that shows that don’t kill off major characters are a head-scratcher to him.

Starr believes in not getting attached to any characters on the show

In a segment with Wired, Starr fielded questions from Reddit, and one of them was, “Will The Boys be next to join the list of controversial (some bad) endings or provide a satisfying conclusion?” which echoed the apprehension of fans of any show who are worried about a bad ending ruining an otherwise great series.

While answering the question, Starr, best known for playing Homelander in The Boys, took a subtle jab at other shows for playing it safe. He added that he watched a show that ended recently, but there were no major character deaths. He essentially took aim at shows that avoid killing key characters even in finales.

“Something just finished… I won’t say what… and nobody died. I was just scratching my head going, ‘There’s nowhere else to go… this is the end of the run, kill some people,’” Starr said.

Interestingly, fans are of the opinion that he is referring to the finale of Stranger Things, where the vast majority of the core cast survives the final showdown with Vecna, and only Eleven’s fate is left somewhat ambiguous.

He further echoed the show’s creator, Eric Kripke’s sentiment that fans should not get attached to any characters on the show.

“Don’t get attached to any characters in [The Boys] … everyone’s head is on the block,” he further added. However, he also implied that it is very rare for a show’s ending to satisfy the entire fanbase, as everyone has different artistic tastes and preferences.

“Has any show ever provided an ending that satisfies everyone? I don’t know you can, I think cause everyone’s different and everyone wants different things,” he said.
