Aldis Hodge clears air on being cast as T’Challa in MCU

Aldis Hodge addressed rumors about potentially playing T’Challa in the MCU, revealing Marvel has not contacted him

Late actor Chadwick Boseman captivated audiences with his portrayal of T’Challa in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther franchise. Such was his impact that the series has still not recast the role following his passing in 2020. In a recent interview, actor Aldis Hodge, who has prior experience in the superhero genre, addressed rumors about him carrying forward Boseman’s legacy.

Hodge says Marvel hasn’t approached him for T’Challa role; highlights the role’s cultural impact

In an interview with 7 PM in Brooklyn, Hodge shared his thoughts about the significance of the role immortalized by Chadwick Boseman. He further said that he has not been contacted by Marvel Studios about the role, while at the same time stating that he wants the role to be “done right,” given the character’s cultural impact.

“Ain’t nobody called me. They’re like ‘Oh, we heard…’ You ain’t heard nothing. Trust me. Don’t give me no smoke with Marvel talking about, ‘You said…’ I ain’t say nothing, man…. I just want to see if they do it again, as a fan of it all, I just want to see it done well and done right,” Hodge stated.

Continuing his discussion about the mantle of taking up the role, he explained that the role should not be seen from the perspective of the glamour associated with it, and instead, the weight of history attached to the project should be recognized.

“If you’re going to step into it, it’s not a situation of, ‘I’m just coming in to be an actor and this cool role and this.’ Unfortunately or fortunately, you’re going to have to realize you’re carrying on a legacy that was already started by Chadwick Boseman, may God rest his soul, and Ryan Coogler, regardless of who it is that steps into those shoes,” he further stated.

The actor, who previously played Hawkman in Black Adam, also spoke at length about the responsibility that would come with stepping into Boseman’s shoes. According to Hodge, the role goes far beyond simply portraying another superhero because Boseman’s performance became culturally significant for Black audiences worldwide.

That’s the effect that’s going to be had, and that’s the expectation of the audience. They’re going to expect that you come in there with that degree of reverence and respect to actually push that legacy forward. So, as long as you carry that and you know it’s there, step into it,” he added.

He also lauded the Black Panther franchise for its contribution to Black representation and impact, emphasizing that Boseman did not “walk away from the role”—he passed away—which creates an added emotional weight surrounding the character. Safe to say, the cultural baggage attached to the role mounts pressure on whichever actor eventually steps into Boseman’s shoes, as any lack of authenticity in portraying the role could invite widespread criticism from audiences.

The comments arrive amid continued rumors about Marvel possibly bringing back T’Challa through the multiverse or by introducing an older version of T’Challa’s son, Toussaint, in future projects such as Avengers: Doomsday or a potential third Black Panther movie. Nevertheless, Marvel has kept mum about any recasting plans.
