Nowadays, there is one stereotype about Hard Sci-Fi movies—these films are dull, monotonous, and filled with equations and calculations. Nevertheless, judging by the box office figures of April 2026, things seem to have changed significantly. Even though some reviewers criticized the long-awaited Project Hail Mary as The Martian on s——-, the $422 million earned speaks for itself. This movie is not about space exploration; instead, this thriller is a story of an ingenious guy who happens to be the one requiring help the most.

How Ryan Gosling made Ryland Grace relatable

After the film premiere held on March 20, 2026, debates have centered around Ryan Gosling playing Ryland Grace. It would not be wrong to state that Gosling gave an exceptional performance, despite the fact that the main hero is just an ordinary middle school science teacher who is in danger of being stuck in a spaceship millions of miles away from his home planet; Gosling does not possess any special abilities except for intelligence.

The critics do not mention the stoic and strong character of the previous years anymore – on the contrary, everyone appreciates how Ryland is scared, confused, and amnesiac, making this character very likable and relatable. Never before has Ryan Gosling played an “authentic” character like Ryland Grace—trying to find the solution to a cosmic problem in order to save Earth, he teaches people physics using humorous explanations.

Even though Rocky does not play an important role in the movie, you probably have already seen this alien creature on Reddit and Twitter forums already—it has become known as the “fan-favorite character of 2026.” You might know that in order to create Rocky, a five-legged eyeless engineer from Erid, directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller used puppetry and haptic technologies.

The mutual affection shown by Ryan Gosling and Rocky made their relationship the “most authentic” one in movie history. Thanks to the fact that the creators did not opt for computer graphics, the viewers could feel how real Rocky really was, especially when interacting with the character’s voice actor, James Ortiz. Communication with Rocky through musical chords made the viewers cry in IMAX cinemas.

With hopelessness reigning in 2026, it is obvious that the motto of this movie, “A plus B equals survival,” has become quite popular. Furthermore, NASA representatives showed great enthusiasm about two theories presented by the movie—Petrova Line and Astrophage. The official new commentary on the film’s synchronization suggests viewing Project Hail Mary multiple times.

It is safe to say that those who think Project Hail Mary is a “bad” and “nerdy” film do not get the point of it: the movie focuses on the idea of a common language required to survive, suggesting that humanity should not explore outer space alone.

Whichever aspect of this movie appeals to you more—whether orbital mechanics or the “famous fist-bump heard throughout the galaxy”—Project Hail Mary is worth watching. If you still haven’t watched this movie, go to your local cinema next week!
