With the end of the series on May 24th, 2024, the fans of Young Sheldon have realized that one thing has been done wrong. Even though the protagonist of the sitcom reached his goals in the end, winning a Nobel Prize and settling down with his family, the fans of his rival, Paige Swanson, are left disappointed in the way their heroine got arrested after all. While some might argue that the tragic story of a gifted girl makes an interesting twist in the series, the rest believe that this ending is cruel and completely irrelevant. So, why do the fans feel disappointed in Paige, and how could her storyline end better?
The mirror Image of a genius, and why she deserved better
In interviews, the writers of the series, including Steve Holland, say that the reason why they decided to end Paige’s storyline in such a manner is that they wanted to depict the character as “a mirror image of Sheldon.” Namely, while the latter had his family protecting and supporting him in times of need, the girl had no such option because her parents had divorced.
The rewatch of how the bright student turned into a rebellious “party girl” is more painful for the viewer since the reasons behind it were more serious than just “teen issues.” While Sheldon managed to overcome all hardships and problems that came with being “the only normal kid,” his rival was more sensitive and vulnerable.
However, the climax in the dissatisfaction appeared when the series finally ended and didn’t mention their idol at all. As the authors explained, McKenna Grace didn’t want to take part in the finale due to her feature films, and that’s why there was no place for their favorite character in the last episode. In response, the fans pointed out that it is hard to imagine why the storyline of Pastor Jeff was discussed while none of the main characters paid attention to Paige.
There is even a theory that the main character of the Big Bang never mentioned Paige throughout his life since the girl’s fate was so tragic that he couldn’t bear talking about her, including addiction or any kind of breakdown.
In turn, some people suppose that Paige outperformed Sheldon in other spheres of activity and worked, for instance, as a researcher or in the government. However, the most optimistic explanation is that the girl will appear in the spin-off called Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, which is already at the second season.
In general, while Sheldon’s destiny in the show seemed quite realistic and understandable for those who watched the film, Paige was rather an example of a talented person losing everything because of the lack of proper care and attention.
The character depicted in the best possible manner how “gifted kid burnout” looks, and, therefore, the ending was disappointing. As a result, there are plenty of theories about Paige’s fate, including the possibility of her rehabilitation or appearance in a new movie.
