Universal Pictures Spanish recently released a complete schedule of untitled event films that are slated for 2028. There are supposedly three animated movies and one adventure movie. This further raised speculations as to what movies might be headlining this schedule, so let’s dive right into this!
Universal hints at Nintendo and Illumination’s collab movie
The Spanish release calendar of Universal showed 3 animated movies and one adventure movie. There’s a high chance that the animated movie could be based on Luigi’s Mansion, as some reports suggest.
Daniel Richtman, known to be a Hollywood insider, hinted at Nintendo and Illumination’s future projects. The projects he listed were The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2, Legend of Zelda, Luigi’s Mansion, and Donkey Kong.
The event film is slated for April 12, 2028, and there are high chances Universal might release Donkey Kong. This is mainly because Nintendo recently filed a copyright, which was registered as a joint Untitled project between both the gaming company and Universal.
The Donkey Kong project is untitled, yet it would be a motion picture, and it also makes sense since the character appeared in the Super Mario Bros. movie. It also leaves room for Luigi’s Mansion to be adapted into a movie, and here’s why it can actually work!
Right after the Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Charlie Day did an exclusive interview with Screen Rant. Day, who voices Luigi in the Mario movies, hinted at a possible adaptation of Luigi’s Mansion, saying:
I would be thrilled to do Luigi’s Mansion, just because it’s such a fun game. And not that you would make it like a horror movie for kids, but it could have some more sort of jump scares in it, which would be fun. It does seem like it would make a great movie, but I am not… They don’t put me in charge of movie studios for good reason. I have no idea.
He encouraged the idea and even pitched it as a favorable sequel with potential. It only makes sense since Luigi’s Mansion was released almost 25 years ago, and the rumors only keep building up.
Some sources also suggest that the project is in its early stages of development and is currently in the works, although no release dates or further details have been made public.
While Luigi’s Mansion and Donkey Kong remain top contenders in the possibilities for the April event film, there are also speculations of a Star Fox movie being included in the schedule.
This is mainly because of Fox McCloud’s introduction in the recent The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, where the character is voiced by Glen Powell. However, these are merely speculations.
In conclusion, Nintendo and Illumination might likely bring a Donkey Kong or Luigi’s Mansion movie in April 2028.
