After the success of Superman, David Corenswet will now ditch his superhero cape for some action on the football field. The actor is set to grace the big screen again with his upcoming film, Mr. Irrelevant. The first look from the film is out, and it is quite striking.
Corenswet seems to be rocking a period-accurate 1980s aesthetic
In his upcoming movie, Corenswet will play John Tuggle, who was popularly given the title “Mr. Irrelevant” after being picked last in the 1983 NFL Draft. What followed was a story of resilience and defying expectations, as he went on to make the New York Giants roster and become a fan favorite due to his work ethic. However, tragically, his NFL career was cut short due to a cancer diagnosis, and he passed away at just 25 years old.
In the first-look images, Corenswet can be seen running shirtless to get into the shape of an athlete playing in the NFL. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he is maintaining a strong athletic build suited for an NFL player, grounded in football realism rather than bulking up dramatically. In another image, he can be seen wearing an orange jersey with white stripes on the sleeves, with “Irrelevant” written on it. He can also be seen sporting a mustache, leaning into 1980s styling.
“There’s a lot to look forward to,” Corenswet told People, adding, “some great mustaches. Jonathan Levine knows music—you’re gonna feel that. It got me dancing. That’s in the movie.”
Furthermore, explaining the theme of the story, he said, “What happens when a person who has defined himself by optimism and resilience is faced with a losing struggle?”
“Can grace and dignity and humor and love transform failure into its own kind of success? These are the questions I thought were asked by John’s story, and I think are asked of each of us at various points in life,” he added.
Meanwhile, the film’s director, Jonathan Levine, stated that John Tuggle’s real-life story was filled with “triumph,” “laughter,” “romance,” and “heartache,” and that he couldn’t find anyone better than Corenswet to do justice to the role. He further said that the Superman actor is the “beating heart and soul” of the movie, and that he couldn’t wait for audiences to see him portray the character of a “real-life superhero.”
Judging by the director’s comments, it is going to be an emotionally stirring sports drama, with Corenswet driving the narrative of the movie. Are you excited to watch Corenswet’s upcoming film? Let us know in the comments section below.
