There are fights, friendships, and some of the most power-packed battles, but most of all, Street Fighter has a stellar cast. This is especially the case with Callina Liang, for whom the role of Chun-Li was a dream come true. Here’s what the actress had to say regarding her role in the upcoming live-action movie!
Callina Liang on playing Chun-Li in Street Fighter
Callina Liang spoke to Fandango about being cast as Chun-Li. She was interviewed alongside the cast members of Street Fighter. When asked how she felt about her character, Liang said,
“It was surreal because I, like I loved that character growing up, and I looked up to her. She’s the first playable female character. She just—she just looks so cool, and she’s Chinese, and I was like, as a little girl growing up, I was like, oh my gosh, I wish I could be like her. So when I put it on, I was like, looking at myself in the mirror, like, what the h—. This is crazy.
To train for a live-action that heavily involves martial arts, fights, and stunts, such as Street Fighter, is no cakewalk. Liang also opened up about training excessively alongside her fellow castmates.
For Chun-Li’s role, she trained for a total of four hours a day practicing kicks and stunts, but the actress said something that is truly endearing.
She credited her stunt double, Megan, for training six months before filming the film, which is commendable to say the least. It is evident in the way the stunt double practiced the spinning bird kick, which is one of her signature moves.
Street Fighter features some of the most amped-up fighting moves. From Barlog’s Crazy Buffalo to Ibuki’s Neckbreaker, the game itself had some of the deadliest combo moves, and it is fascinating to see it all come to life in a live-action movie.
The upcoming 2026 movie is the third installment in the franchise and is directed by Kitao Sakurai. He is an actor and a director who has worked as an executive producer for Eric Andre Show, Butterfly, and Twisted Metal.
Street Fighter is slated for release on October 16, 2026.
