It is a bittersweet moment for Disney fans, as the Tangled director Nathan Greno has all but confirmed that the 2010 animated smash hit may not be getting a sequel. However, on a positive note, a live-action adaptation has been greenlit by the studio. In a recent development, actor Diego Luna, known for playing Cassian Andor in the Star Wars universe, has reportedly joined the movie’s cast.

Diego Luna has officially joined the cast of Disney’s live-action Tangled, as per an exclusive story by The Hollywood Reporter. The actor is best known for projects such as Narcos: Mexico, Andor, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. While the report confirms Luna’s involvement, his exact role hasn’t been publicly disclosed yet.

As per reports, he will be playing a new character created for the remake. Meanwhile, Luna joins the star-studded cast that includes Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Scarlett Johansson was previously in talks for the role of Mother Gothel but did not join the project due to scheduling conflicts.

The production of the film is expected to begin in mid-2026, with no official release date set at the time of publication. The project, which was announced in 2024, has had a stop-start development cycle. Disney paused the development in 2025 after Snow White underperformed at the box office. However, the project has been revived again after renewed confidence in live-action remakes.

“I’m not against sequels. There was, I will say, after we finished Tangled… It’s a tricky place, because I’ll put it this way: once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say?
