Sony drops timeline update on ‘Kpop Demon Hunters’ sequel

Awards campaigns further delayed immediate sequel development plans.

Therefore, the wait for KPop Demon Hunters fans who are eagerly awaiting a quick return of the series will have to wait a little longer. Although the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is indeed underway, it is certainly not as soon as people may have anticipated. However, based on a recent update from The Hollywood Reporter, the chances of the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters coming out in 2029 seem to be quite ambitious. This is because the co-president of Sony Pictures Animation, Kristine Belson, has just let the cat out of the bag to indicate that a 2029 release of the sequel would indeed be “correct thinking.”

Why the Delay?

The reason for the delay in the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is primarily due to timing. As earlier mentioned, KPop Demon Hunters has just made history for Netflix as the most significant film launch for Netflix in late 2025, surpassing other global hits like Squid Game, Wednesday, and Stranger Things. The film has been followed by a significant awards season campaign, including some of the most prestigious awards in animation and music.

As Belson has also mentioned in an interview, directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans still haven’t started on the sequel. Therefore, it can safely be said that it will take around four to five years to make a high-end animated film.

Sony co-president Damien de Froberville said that this was “KPop will be the same thing. It’s just like Spider-Verse. The world is so rich—the world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There’s so much we could expand into.”

While there was an introduction of the K-pop group Huntrix in the first film, there was an idea of something deeper and more profound with the demon king and the enigmatic character of Jinu. This is where Sony feels that they can capitalize on this film.

There was some talk of this film possibly being a live-action film, but Kang feels that it should definitely be an animated film. It’s not easy to imagine this film any other way. There is a sequel to this film, but it’s not coming out anytime soon.
