Nicole Kidman, who has held the screen in everything from Moulin Rouge! and The Hours to the more recent Big Little Lies, and Sandra Bullock, whose career has spanned from Speed to Gravity and The Blind Side, are officially back as the Owens sisters. According to the stars, the relentless demand from fans finally made a sequel possible, and returning to the magical Victorian home without each other would not feel right.
Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock say the witches are back for a new generation
Speaking at CinemaCon 2026 on April 14, the duo took the stage to confirm that Practical Magic 2 will hit theaters on September 18, 2026. Kidman greeted the audience by referencing her famous AMC theater monologue, saying, “We come to this place for magic,” before declaring that the witches have returned.
Bullock joked about the “relentless” calls for a sequel and noted that getting back into character alongside Kidman just clicked.
“I’m sure you’ve heard of the Owens family,” Bullock narrated in the first teaser released on April 20. “The ones from Massachusetts, the ones their neighbors whisper are witches.“
For the lead actresses, the project is inseparable from the family legacy.
They have repeatedly said they have no interest in a simple reboot, instead focusing on an adaptation of Alice Hoffman’s The Book of Magic. The story picks up twenty-five years later, with Sally’s now-grown daughters, Kylie and Antonia, played by Joey King and Maisie Williams.
In their view, any version of this sequel that didn’t include the original aunts, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, would simply fall short.
The production has also become more outspoken about the humor and the darker stakes this time around. The trailer introduces a mysterious character played by Lee Pace, who is warned about the family’s romantic curse.
Recently, the actresses joked that their answer to whether things will be “fine” this time is tied to their messy past.
In the new footage, when Kidman’s Gillian says everything will be okay, Bullock’s Sally replies, “Everything’s going to be okay? Just like it was when we had to bury a corpse under a rose bush? That kind of fine, or different?“
“Everyone we love dies… a very horrible death,” Gillian adds. “It’s not great for the Tinder bio.”
Instead, the duo believes that taking the sisters on a journey to an abandoned castle remains the perfect way to explore the origins of their magic.
Although the film is still months away, the creators have continued to build hype by recreating the iconic cliffside house for the shoot. They see the return to midnight margaritas and roof-jumping as a companion to the original cult classic rather than a replacement.
