Nicolas Cage‘s interpretation of Spider-Noir is set to deviate from classic portrayals of the hero. In what can be described as an unprecedented move, the upcoming live-action series will feature organic webbing in the same manner Tobey Maguire‘s Spider-Man did in the trilogy directed by Sam Raimi.

Dark tone influences a realistic body-horror approach to Spider-Man’s abilities

As opposed to most other Spider-Man incarnations that make use of artificial web shooters, Nicolas Cage will have to produce his webs biologically in his universe. Unlike Peter Parker, the character will be played as Ben Reilly, an older man working as a private detective in 1930s New York City. As such, organic webbing seems to be a fitting choice to emphasize the noir and horror themes in the series.

In fact, one of the scenes featured in the trailer gives us an idea about the character’s powers. Namely, footage from CCXPMX26 shows the private detective meeting a swarm of spiders and going through the process of mutating, thus confirming his biological origin of powers.

Taking place during the Great Depression period, the series features a tough protagonist who will have to face crime and moral struggles while overcoming violent urges. With a reworked character identity, the creator will be able to explore aspects that are not usually associated with Peter Parker. These include a pessimistic attitude and destructive behavior.

Supporting characters get their noir versions, too. Brendan Gleeson plays Silvermane while Jack Huston takes on the role of Sandman, who, in this universe, deals with a deteriorating condition as a result of his powers. The cast also includes Abraham Popoola as Tombstone.

With the premiere date approaching quickly, we can only hope that the dark take on Spider-Man’s story lives up to our expectations. Consisting of eight episodes, the series will drop simultaneously in black-and-white and color formats on May 25, 2026, on MGM+. Two days later, it will premiere on Prime Video internationally.
