Almost 25 years ago, The Princess Diaries shaped and redefined rom-com and coming-of-age movies for generations to come. It remains one of the cult popular movies from the Y2K era, and it seems like there’s an interesting update regarding the movie’s third installment.
Meg Cabot on Princess Diaries’ third film
As reported by Buzzing Pop on X, Meg Cabot, the author of The Princess Diaries, shared an update about the potential of a third movie, citing uncertainty, saying:
“I don’t know when they’re going to film it because Anne Hathaway, as you’ve probably seen, is making a million movies right now, but one of these days she’s going to go to the castle that we have actually rented and is sitting there waiting.”
Back in October 2024, it was announced that Anne Hathaway would be joining the third movie. She hinted at her return through an Instagram post saying “Miracles Do Happen”.
This was after Deadline reported that the actress would return, and Hathaway did confirm it later on. Adele Lim would direct the movie while Flora Greeson would write the screenplay.
In a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, the actress was asked whether she would return to the third movie, and she replied, “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible. I am that much older, and Annie, the princess, our queen, is so much older. And I am not sure whether it would float or run.”
While the IMDb page states both Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews as main cast, there has been no official confirmation regarding Andrews’ return.
Aside from that, The Princess Diaries 2 ended on a high note. The first movie was all about Mia Thermopolis discovering her real identity as the princess of Genovia.
The second one was all about her stepping up her game while facing a range of challenges, both to her personal life and to the throne. It all ended well with Mia being crowned the Queen of Genovia while she called off her wedding to Nicholas.
Meg Cabot would likely focus on Mia’s role as the Queen of Genovia while traversing motherhood, according to fan speculations, though none of it has been confirmed as of yet.
