You may know him as Kenneth from Corvette Summer or Private Griff from the Big Red One, but Mark Hamill’s breakthrough role was Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. He shot to fame after that, and it seems the actor has nothing but praise for Star Wars’ new boss, Dave Filoni.
Mark Hamill opens up on Star Wars’ boss Dave Filoni
Mark Hamill spoke to USA Today about his collaboration with the Lego Group. He also spoke about the new Star Wars boss, Dave Filoni, and how his entry into the franchise is rather favorable.
He praised Filoni in the interview, saying, “George was a mentor to Dave, so he knows George’s sensibility.” This is very much true, as George Lucas created the world of Star Wars in 1977, and he took Filoni under his wing.
Filoni co-created Ahsoka Tano and Chopper (C1-10P) with Lucas. He has directed several films under the Star Wars banner, and in 2023, he was made the Chief Creative Officer of the studio. This means that he will be at the helm of most creative projects within the Star Wars franchise.
Not just that, Filoni has finesse and expertise in handling both animated and live-action productions. He isn’t just a director but a well-rounded storyboard artist and storyteller, especially with his approach toward source materials for Avatar.
Filoni worked for Nickelodeon before receiving his breakthrough with Lucasfilm in 2005. His role in Lucasfilm seems promising to most fans who previously critiqued Kathleen Kennedy’s tenure.
While Kennedy supervised various projects, including Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there was immense criticism and backlash during her time in the studio. This was mainly due to her creative differences with the staff and the inconclusivity when it comes to creating set plans for the trilogy.
The constant friction was what led to several filmmakers walking away from the projects. These included Taika Waititi, who dropped the project after constant delays, and subsequently, Colin Trevorrow, who exited due to fundamental creative differences between him and Kennedy, as some sources suggested.
Filoni’s entry as a creative head is indeed refreshing for the studio since he understands the nuances and the nitty-gritty of Lucas’ work, as Hamill pointed out.
