Kevin Feige confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday went further in honoring the X-Men legacy than anyone had expected, and the detail that got fans talking is a very specific one. Speaking to the press, Feige confirmed that some of the original sets from the Fox X-Men films were reused during production on Doomsday and that there were days on set where 30 to 35 actors were filming at the same time.

For a franchise that has spent over two decades carefully managing scale, that number says everything about what kind of movie this is going to be.

As Feige told Fandango when asked how Doomsday connects to Secret Wars, “People familiar with the comic stories see that they will relate. They relate in a very different way than Infinity War and Endgame. I think people are expecting a similar connection, and while one certainly does lead into the other, it’s in a very different way. I will say that Secret Wars is as ambitious a project as we’ve ever embarked on.

The decision to reuse the Fox sets is not just a practical production choice. For Feige, who first worked on the original X-Men movies as an associate producer in 2000, before the MCU even existed, bringing those same physical spaces back for the biggest Marvel movie ever made is about as full-circle as it gets.

When asked what it meant to revisit those characters, he said, “It was another dream that we just didn’t think about for many years. Deadpool and Wolverine scratched the surface of that. And now, we’re really delving into it with Doomsday.

The confirmed returning X-Men cast for Doomsday includes Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, James Marsden as Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.

A CinemaCon trailer reportedly showed a fight between Shang-Chi and Gambit inside the X-Mansion, which would suggest the original sets are getting more than just a brief cameo in the film.

Feige also addressed how the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men will all share the same screen for the first time, saying the fun is “seeing them visit each other’s homes,” and that the Baxter Building set from The Fantastic Four: First Steps will return in Doomsday with considerably more people in it than before.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
