Keanu Reeves played the starring role in the brand new Apple TV film Outcome, which was released on April 10. In the film, he shared screen space with legendary director Martin Scorsese, who plays Richie “Red” Rodriguez, a talent agent for young actors. In a recent interview, Reeves spoke about how it felt to work with one of cinema’s most respected auteurs.
Reeves calls Martin Scorsese “master”
Notably, Reeves and Scorsese had never collaborated on a project before, so when the opportunity presented itself in Jonah Hill’s dark comedy, Reeves was thrilled, to say the least. Although the legendary filmmaker appears as an actor and not a director, it was still just as awe-inspiring for the veteran actor.
“When I heard that Mr. Scorsese was going to appear in the film as Red, I was just like, whatttt!” he said to ScreenTime, adding, “As a filmmaker, as a person… I met him a couple of times over the years.”
Describing the The Wolf of Wall Street filmmaker as a “master,” he stated that acting alongside him was “special.”
“To act with such a master, very special days,” the Matrix actor said.
This isn’t Scorsese’s first appearance in front of the camera, as he has made numerous cameo appearances in his own films and others, such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and roles in The King of Comedy and Quiz Show, as well as Killers of the Flower Moon, among many others. In Outcome, as a talent agent tied to Reeves’ character, he has actual dialogue and a presence in key moments. His role sits somewhere between a blink-and-miss cameo and a major supporting part.
Reeves plays Reef Hawk, a Hollywood star whose polished public image starts unraveling when a blackmail video from his past comes back to haunt him. This marks a departure from the action-hero roles he usually plays, delving into a morally grey character. Nevertheless, the film presents a cross-generational meeting of Hollywood icons with very different cinematic identities.
With John Wick star taking on more experimental projects and expanding beyond his acting persona, one can only hope that Scorsese will one day be in the director’s chair with the actor as his leading man.
