Kane Parsons is the youngest filmmaker to direct a movie for A24, the studio behind gems such as Marty Supreme, Midsommar, and Euphoria. Yep, the 20-year-old is taking charge of Backrooms, a film adaptation of the titular web series, which debuted in 2022. And now, Parsons just revealed that he’s wrapped up the highly anticipated project and has also dropped the date. Check out below!
Kane Parsons unveils release date for Backrooms
As reported by DiscussingFilm, Kane Parsons confirmed he finished filming Backrooms, which will grace our theater screens on May 29, 2026. Written by Will Soodik and Kane Parsons, the 105-minute thriller will feature an ensemble cast of Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, and Mark Duplass. For context, it’s a movie adaptation of The Backrooms, which follows the story of Async.
It’s a fictional research institute that comes across backrooms and attempts to document the research that follows. For those unfamiliar, backrooms are a horror urban legend featuring a never-ending maze with yellow walls, damp carpet, and dim fluorescent lights. Originally released as a short film in 2022, the project gained popularity for its horrifying creepypasta theme and visual effects.
The positive reception prompted Parsons to develop another 22 short films, which culminated in a web series. Its production hit the brakes in January 2023, with the latest installment releasing the following year in September. At the time of writing, the show has garnered over 75 million views.
In recent years, A24 has spearheaded projects with less substance in the plot but a dense atmosphere that leaves viewers with unsettling questions and thoughts. The studio has set itself apart through this approach, with fans and movie buffs associating its films with a specific, recognizable tone. The melancholy scene from the 2019 thriller Midsommar, where Florence Pugh’s character walks through trauma and a sea of flowers, is a classic example.
With a bright, eerie set-up and a slow-burning pace, the movie seamlessly creates psychological discomfort among viewers. Bright yellow walls and a pile of abandoned furniture in the Backrooms poster hint that the project could carry forward A24’s signature legacy in horror. Are you pumped for the upcoming adaptation?
