Social media isn’t everyone’s best suit, and the same goes for Jujutsu Kaisen’s mangaka Gege Akutami. He authored one of the bestselling new-gen shonen manga, yet he chooses to steer clear of online spaces. The mangaka has a valid reason for being absent from social media, and here’s what he had to say!

Jujutsu Kaisen author Gege Akutami on why he’s not on social media

Gege Akutami revealed his reasons for not being on social media: “I’d start picking fights with Middle School students; it’d be over for me.”

He shared his thoughts on staying away from online spaces in a Q&A in early 2026. The author also added that the announcements, as well as updates on the manga, are solely managed by the staff in the editorial team.

To be fair, his concerns are valid considering toxic fanbases in the anime industry. It isn’t merely Jujutsu Kaisen but My Hero Academia and various other manga that get a lot of flak and criticism from unsupportive fans.

In the past, Akutami received death threats for killing off fan-favorite character Satoru Gojo. His peers, Kohei Horikoshi and Tite Kubo, have also faced significant harassment from cyber bullies and trolls who identify as fans.

In Kubo’s case, the mangaka clapped back at fans and told them to write the manga if they’re dissatisfied with the process. Kei Urana, Gachiakuta’s author, has actively spoken up against rude and entitled fans, but every author’s approach to fans is completely different.

Time and time again, anime spaces as a whole have disregarded this behavior as aligning with a fandom. Readers, viewers, and true fans have called out the bullying and have supported authors through and through.

Despite facing backlash from fans, Akutami expressed his gratitude to fans for helping him throughout his journey in a final message. “This is the end of the Jujutsu Kaisen that I have drawn. To everyone who supported me, any reason is fine. I truly thank you. Until we meet again.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The manga is available for reading on Shueisha’s Manga Plus app.
