The successful working relationship between Jason Statham and David Ayer continues to flourish, as both are planning on teaming up again on a project called John Doe. Coming after the successful releases of The Beekeeper (2024) and A Working Man (2025), John Doe will be presented at Cannes Film Market as a major package. Produced by Miramax, the production is expected to begin in late 2026.

Plot driven by the man’s inability to recall the past turns filmmakers towards psychological action

John Doe revolves around a man who wakes up with no recollection of his identity or past. However, as he starts to remember, he learns that he was a part of a mission before falling under some people’s control. He is trained as a professional killer but cannot recall what his mission entailed. What is worse, the same company that was responsible for his training hunts him down. All the memories of his past are triggered due to one of his contacts, named Eliza, whom he remembers only because she gives his life meaning.

Zak Penn, an author famous for big pictures like The Avengers and Ready Player One, penned the script of John Doe. With the focus shifting to the hero’s memory, Ayer and Statham try their hand at writing a story, which has little to do with revenge. As per Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman, John Doe represents a new level for the duo’s cooperation because of the addition of narrative elements to the action scenes.

Thanks to The Beekeeper and A Working Man, the partnership of Jason Statham and David Ayer became famous among moviegoers. As such, the duo can count on success and the stable flow of fans in theaters.

It is not surprising that David Ayer was not involved in the production of Beekeeper 2, as director Timo Tjahjanto has taken over the helm for the sequel while Ayer focuses on other projects, including John Doe. International sales of the project will take place through Black Bear Pictures at the Cannes Film Market in May 2026.
