Warner Bros. announced at CinemaCon 2026 that Jamie Dornan would be playing Aragorn, aka “Strider,” in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. This marks the first time that there has been a different actor to play the role of Aragorn in live action, ever since the role of the character was made famous by Viggo Mortensen in the original movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien‘s books. In the movie, there will be a focus on the early life of the character as an unknown Ranger.

Younger Strider gets his moment

For several months now, speculation has run rampant regarding whether or not Mortensen would come back. In an announcement made early this April, directors Andy Serkis and Philippa Boyens announced that Mortensen had been approached about playing his role once again. At 67 years old, however, he turned down the offer because he felt that reprising the role would only be appropriate if Aragorn’s age matched naturally with the script and if the script matched the level of quality of the works of Tolkien.

The movie is supposed to show us what happened before the events of the original films, during a time when Aragorn was still a Ranger and thus young Strider. Hence, Warner Bros. decided to cast Dornan in order to depict this earlier period of his life, which gives the filmmakers an explanation to change up the casting.

During the CinemaCon presentation, the studio confirmed a mix of familiar faces and new additions. Andy Serkis returns as Gollum while also directing, with Ian McKellen back as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo, and Lee Pace reprising Thranduil. New cast members include Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall.

The film is being produced by Peter Jackson alongside Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and centers on Gandalf and Aragorn tracking Gollum before he can reveal the One Ring’s location to Sauron. An exact release date has not been confirmed yet, though the project is currently expected to arrive sometime in late 2027.

By casting a new Aragon, Warner Bros. runs the risk of upsetting many fans of the franchise. It remains to be seen if having familiar actors will help with this problem.
