Avengers: Doomsday will go head-to-head with Dune: Part Three in a massive box office clash on December 18. Reportedly, the latter has secured the IMAX exclusivity window, which Marvel Studios missed out on. Recently, The Walt Disney Company introduced Infinity Vision as a counter to the premium format’s theatrical screenings, with IMAX’s CFO calling it a marketing gimmick for the upcoming release.

Disney compensating for no IMAX platform for Avengers: Doomsday with Infinity Vision

Disney recently unveiled Infinity Vision at CinemaCon 2026, a certification system for premium large-format theaters, helping audiences find the best available screens for Disney films. To qualify for this certification, theaters need large screens, laser projection, and premium audio systems, positioning it as an alternative to IMAX screens.

Now, evaluating the concept of Disney’s Infinity Vision, IMAX CFO Natasha Fernandes called it a “pure marketing play” to counter the reality of one of their biggest tentpole films not getting access to premium IMAX screens. She further claimed that audiences already had access to premium formats like Dolby and PLF screens, and that it doesn’t offer anything unique to theater-goers.

“You know, from our view, it’s a pure marketing play to try and offset the fact that they don’t have an IMAX platform or brand for Avengers: Doomsday. It doesn’t offer the consumer anything that they couldn’t get yesterday,” Fernandes stated during the company’s earnings conference call.

Furthermore, she stated that IMAX is the “undisputed leader in premium cinema,” emphasizing its relationship with filmmakers. It must be noted that the premium screening format not only changes how films are shown but also how they are shot using IMAX cameras, greatly enhancing the theatrical experience.

“Marvel fans we believe are among the savviest, most discerning movie goers out there. And there is a reason why we are the undisputed leader in premium cinema worldwide. No one can match our relationships with filmmakers,” she further said.

It cannot be denied that IMAX screens drive higher ticket prices, premium audience turnout, and better box office perception. If that wasn’t the case, previous Avengers films wouldn’t have opted for such a unique experience. Now, it remains to be seen if Disney’s approach with Infinity Vision will drive more people to watch its movies in certified theaters.
