The MCU is expected to reboot and integrate the X-Men into the franchise after Phase 6. X-Men characters have already been teased in Avengers: Doomsday, while their involvement in Avengers: Secret Wars is widely expected. As per the latest industry reports, actress Hunter Schafer is reportedly being considered for the role of Mystique in the X-Men reboot.
The “Mystique” around Hunter Schafer
After the Fox era, Marvel Studios is developing a full reboot of the X-Men franchise for the MCU. The project is still in early development, with no official cast announced by Marvel. According to insider MyTimeToShineHello, Hunter Schafer is one of the top contenders for the role of Mystique, aka Raven Darkhölme, in the upcoming reboot.
It is still unclear whether Schafer is in talks, shortlisted, or just being discussed. The actress is known for her roles in the hit HBO show Euphoria, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and the horror film Cuckoo.
In the X-Men universe, Mystique is a shape-shifting mutant known for her expertise in espionage and combat skills. She is essentially a highly trained spy and assassin, and one of the most dangerous non-telepath mutants. Although she is not part of the core X-Men team, she more often than not serves as an antagonist and is known to be a member (or leader) of the Brotherhood of Mutants, which opposes the X-Men. However, she is best described as a rogue agent who switches allegiances based on her goals.
The character was played by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence in the X-Men films produced by 20th Century Fox. Nevertheless, the MCU reboot of the X-Men does not have an officially announced release date and is likely to be part of a larger franchise reset following Secret Wars. Even the teaser for Avengers: Doomsday features characters like Professor X, Cyclops, and Magneto from the Fox era.
Moreover, there are also reports circulating about Sadie Sink being linked to Jean Grey and Sydney Sweeney being linked to Emma Frost. As per industry speculation, the X-Men reboot will likely center on the foundational mutant characters from the source material, with Mystique taking on an antagonistic role.
