Gege Akutami reveals real meaning behind Gojo Satoru’s name, design change

Gege Akutami debunks Satoru Gojo fan theories, revealing blindfold change was for faster weekly manga deadlines.

The Jujutsu Kaisen fandom is in shock, maybe even laughing at the absurdity of it all, after an interview clip published on February 27, 2026, where the creator, Gege Akutami, essentially destroyed some of the most beloved Satoru Gojo fandom theories. For the better part of the series, the fandom analyzed every detail, every word, every possible meaning hidden in the dialogue, every possible Buddhist reference, and so forth, in relation to the character Gojo. Gege’s response? It’s not that deep.

The name “Gojo”—less myth, more preference

Gojo is, in fact, the descendant of the third of Japan’s three vengeful spirits, Sugawara no Michizane, in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. Gege confirmed that they indeed did research the descendants of the historical figure Michizane, where the name ‘Gojo’ is part of the family name.

However, the final decision was made, in part, due to something much simpler than destiny or cosmic irony, something much deeper than the possible meaning of the name ‘Gojo.’ Gege stated, “Ah, Gojo …goes back to Volume 0… Speaking of this, I kind of regret it. Well, rather than regret, since Gojo is descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, I thought about that and looked through the family lineage of his descendants, and found the surname ‘Gojo.’ Also, I personally like numbers, like kanji numerals, so because I like them, I decided on ‘Gojo.’”

So, according to Gege, why was there a change from white bandages to sleek black blindfolds? Well, “that’s because of weekly serialization; I wanted to make it as easy to draw as possible.”

As a manga artist, shaving precious seconds off each panel can be a matter of survival in the weekly serialization world. “If something looks different, it’s probably because it was troublesome.” The answer was so refreshingly honest that it was almost insulting—and totally in character for the manga artist.

When asked if his girlfriend loved Gojo so much that she no longer found him attractive, the manga artist simply laughed. Of course, for long-time fans of the manga, the “love-hate” relationship between the manga artist and his über-popular character was no secret, so this reaction was totally in character for the manga artist.

So, was there any other change that was not just for efficiency? Well, no, according to the manga artist, there was no lore expansion going on here. It was simply a case of survival in the manga world.

And now that the “Complete Memorial” edition of the manga is coming out in March 2026, fans can expect a whole lot more home truths from the manga artist.

The moral of the story? Sometimes the most powerful sorcerer in the history of the world was created simply because his creator loves the number five—and hates drawing bandages.
