According to Eric Kripke, there is one major thing he regrets about The Boys final season, and it is that it was created before the 2024 presidential election. Just days before the show is set to premiere on April 8, Kripke admitted to TV Guide and IGN that he hopes his show’s political undertones will feel like an exaggerated version of what is to come, but now he believes it might actually be closer to home than he and his writers anticipated.
Eric Kripke says ‘The Boys’ season 5 now feels too real
In an interview with TV Guide and IGN, Kripke admitted to being “totally bummed out” to say that his show’s scripts were completed before the presidential election. According to him, his writers were aiming to write an exaggerated version of what creeping authoritarianism in America would look like, like in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four.
“I’m totally bummed out to say we wrote it before the election. The plan was, ‘Let’s write a 1984 version of what creeping authoritarianism looks like in America,’ and maybe everyone will be like, ‘Whew, we really dodged a bullet,’ but instead, we got hit with the bullet.”
Kripke added, “The writers’ room has had one dark joke for years: ‘Bad for the world, good for the show.’ I have to admit, I wish it weren’t true.”
The last season will begin immediately after season 4, with Homelander now in complete control of the United States. Kripke explained that characters Hughie Campbell, Mother’s Milk, and Frenchie will be stuck in “Freedom Camps,” which was originally intended to be as absurd and over-the-top as possible for the storyline.
On the other hand, Annie January, or Starlight, will be the face of the rebellion against Homelander’s dictatorship. Kripke said that this storyline is the show’s last commentary on celebrity culture and fascism.
Kripke also teased that one line delivered by Homelander in episode 7 will be the most shocking line writers were able to come up with for the show. However, Kripke said that when they were in post-production for the show, a politician had already said those words or something very similar to it.
Season 5 of The Boys will be out on April 8 on Prime Video, with two episodes.
