Fascinated by Ellen DeGeneres‘ hosting on the titular daytime show, director Andrew Stanton specifically wrote a role for her. She became the voice behind Dory, a character from Finding Nemo (2003) and its sequel, Finding Dory (2016). With plans for the Pixar franchise’s expansion in motion, fans will finally get to see DeGeneres reprising her role as the beloved blue tang fish. Read on to catch all the details below!
Ellen DeGeneres to join Pixar’s new Finding Nemo project
As reported by Deadline, Ellen DeGeneres is reprising her role as Dory in Pixar’s third installment of Finding Nemo. The production of the short film has just kicked off, and the release date timeline remains unconfirmed. Moreover, the company has yet to reveal other details about the untitled project.
Meanwhile, Andrew Stanton’s Finding Nemo explores the journey of Marlin (Albert Brooks), an overprotective clownfish who embarks on a mission to find his lost son, Nemo (Alexander Gould). Marlin and her forgetful companion, Dory, face threats from other fish in the ocean while Nemo plans her escape from the Sydney dentist’s office fish tank.
It became one of Pixar’s most beloved franchises and bagged multiple prestigious awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The movie was also a massive box-office success, earning $941 million globally. Plus, Ellen’s Dory struck a chord with both critics and fans, remaining the movie’s most memorable character.
The character got her own movie, titled Finding Dory, in 2016 with Stanton at the helm once more. At the time of its release, the flick joined the list of the highest-grossing movies, earning over $1 billion globally. Meanwhile, DeGeneres has lent her voice to Dory beyond the franchise. Her voice has been used for cross-platform projects and multiple Disney theme park attractions, such as Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage at Disneyland.
Besides her filmography, DeGeneres is a cornerstone on television with her talk show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Produced by Warner Bros., the show ran for 19 seasons and concluded in May 2022. During this stretch, the show featured almost all A-listers from Hollywood and landed 64 Daytime Emmys. Also, the new Pixar project marks the host/actor’s return to the screen since her 2024 Netflix stand-up special, Your Approval. As Ellen’s next film takes shape, it’s the perfect time to rewatch the original Nemo adventures.
