The Walt Disney Company has announced that it is working on the sequel to its live-action remake of ‘Lilo & Stitch,’ and it is set to release on May 26, 2028. The announcement was made during the company’s annual shareholder meeting, where its incoming CEO, Josh D’Amaro, revealed that the company is working on the sequel remake of the original 2002 animated film that crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.
Sequel builds on record-breaking success
‘Lilo & Stitch 2’ is reportedly going to be more than just a sequel to the original 2025 remake. The screenplay is being written by Chris Sanders, who is also the co-creator of the original 2002 animated film. The sequel is also going to feature Chris Sanders as the voice of Stitch.
The story is reportedly going to be completely original and is not going to be adapted from any of the previous sequels, such as ‘Stitch! The Movie’ and ‘Leroy & Stitch,’ which were released in 2003 and 2006, respectively.
The story is reportedly going to build upon the universe that was created in the first live-action remake. The main cast from the 2025 film is likely to be reprised, including Maia Kealoha as Lilo and Sydney Elizabeth Agudong as Nani, along with Zach Galifianakis, Billy Magnussen, and Courtney B. Vance. Although talks are still in progress, the cast is likely to retain the success of the first film.
There are already speculations regarding the direction of the sequel, especially since hints from the 2025 film revealed that there are other experiments besides Stitch, such as Reuben and Angel. Considering Sanders’ involvement in the film, fans are likely to see Stitch’s “cousins” in the sequel, which will greatly expand the universe.
The film is also part of a broader strategy for 2028, as Disney aims for a packed release calendar. Notably, Pixar’s ‘Incredibles 3’ is set to arrive just weeks later, signaling a major summer box office push for the studio.
