Chris Evans’ comeback as ‘Fatherly’ Captain America in the “Avengers: Doomsday” teaser surprise

Chris Evans’ return suggests Captain America’s story was never truly finished.

Chris Evans is officially back in the fold of the Marvel Universe, but this time around, Captain America isn’t just an icon of heroism; instead, the character represents heroism and the role of a father. It’s been proven through the first teaser trailer of the coming Avengers: Doomsday that Steve Rogers will indeed be back, along with a child, leaving the viewing audience in shock as a result. This film will release on December 18, 2026, and the teaser trailer was launched alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash as part of the year-long countdown.

A known hero but a new story

The teaser trailer opens on a peaceful farmhouse setting as a soft piano rendition of an Avengers theme plays as Steve rides his motorcycle home, and then there is a depiction of Steve holding his infant child as he contemplates life. The image of his famous helmet and his prideful gaze contrast sharply with that of a life that normally is full of turmoil as part of the Avengers, and this immediately creates curiosity as to his place within Marvel history.

“The teaser comes at a time when Marvel is lining up several character teasers prior to the movie, and it comes with far more significance than just for nostalgic reasons. In Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers had lived out his life with Peggy Carter after the return of the Infinity Stones as he handed over the mantle to Sam Wilson as the new Captain America.”

What it means for the future of the MCU

Is this Steve Rogers a variant, the same person who appears across timelines, or something completely different? Marvel does not seem interested in providing answers to these questions and is instead allowing speculation to build hype. But he is not coming alone. He is joined by Robert Downey Jr., not playing Iron Man but playing Doctor Doom, a big part of the Marvel universe across many different lines from both the Avengers and the X-Men universe, with a behemoth of a cast for Doomsday, Marvel is clearly using it as a reset button after many years of multiverse-building.

But for now, possibly with a long way off until its release date, Marvel could not be more correct about sparking discussion about what fatherhood could be for Captain America himself, and what it means for a legacy. Indeed, even when offering a very short video clip of a possible visit to a farm via a teaser trailer, Marvel once again shows this is a saga very far from over for fans around the world right now.
