Timothée Chalamet has struck a chord with millions with his top-tier craft over the years. But even the actor’s powerful filmography couldn’t save his skin when he claimed last month that “no one cares” about opera and ballet. Those callous remarks drew massive backlash from artists and folks in Hollywood. And guess what? The slamming hasn’t died down, as Charlize Theron recently labeled Chalamet’s move as “very reckless” while highlighting the challenges faced by dancers.

Charlize Theron bashes Chalamet for his comments over ballet and opera

Charlize Theron delivered a cutting response to Timothée Chalamet’s comments during a recent interview with The New York Times. It all unfolded when the actress was asked about the mental challenges that came with her previous roles. Describing dancing as “one of the hardest things,” she showed great respect towards dancers for putting their bodies through tough routines.

Hearing Theron’s response, interviewer Lulu Garcia-Navarro couldn’t help but turn her attention towards Chalamet’s notorious statement against ballet and opera.

“Oh, boy, I hope I run into him one day,” Theron replied. “That was a very reckless comment on an art form, two art forms, that we need to lift up constantly because, yes, they do have a hard time. But in 10 years, AI is going to be able to do Timothée’s job, but it will not be able to replace a person on a stage dancing live. And we shouldn’t [expletive] on other art forms.”

Doubling down on her stance, Theron explained how dance instilled discipline in her and inspired her to work hard and lead a tough and structured life. Further, the Atomic Blonde fame revealed suffering from blood infections and blisters during her training, calling the experience “borderline a——-.” Turns out, Theron revealed her mentors didn’t allow her to skip sessions despite such conditions, underscoring the hardships dancers face.

And that’s something that you have to practice every single day, the mindset of just, you don’t give up, there’s no other option, you keep going,” she added.

Meanwhile, Theron’s reply comes nearly a month after Chalamet’s controversial interview at the CNN & Variety Town Hall Event, along with Matthew McConaughey. He said he respects people, including himself, who appear on talk shows and urge people to watch movies in theaters or to keep certain genres alive. But at the same time, the actor acknowledged that powerful movies such as Barbie or Oppenheimer naturally draw in audiences who are genuinely “loud and proud” about them.

And I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera, or things where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive.’ Even though it’s like, no one cares about this anymore,” he added. “All respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
