Timothée Chalamet-starrer Marty Supreme received nine nominations at the 98th Academy Awards. However, it was an unfortunate night for the film, as it came out of Hollywood’s biggest night empty-handed. Chalamet, who is also one of the film’s producers, was nominated for Best Actor, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Amid ballet controversy, Timothée Chalamet faces disappointment at the Oscars

Timothée Chalamet was nominated for the Best Actor category at the Oscars alongside several illustrious names, including Michael B. Jordan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Ethan Hawke, and Wagner Moura. However, as the cameras panned to the nominees at the moment of reckoning, Chalamet was resigned to polite applause, maintaining a calm and composed expression as Jordan won for Sinners.

Marty Supreme was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Casting. However, the film did not win any awards. Regardless of the Oscars outcome, the 30-year-old actor has built an impressive résumé of major award nominations. The biggest night in Hollywood also marked his third Best Actor nomination before the age of 30, having previously been nominated for Call Me by Your Name and Dune: Part Two.

Chalamet had been considered a strong favorite ahead of the Oscars, having won the Golden Globe and the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Actor. Nonetheless, his portrayal of the brash ping-pong hustler Marty Mauser ultimately fell short with Academy voters, as the award went to Michael B. Jordan for his performance in Sinners.

The actor also became the butt of a joke during the ceremony, as his earlier comments about ballet’s waning influence in the entertainment industry were satirized by the show’s host, Conan O’Brien. He teased Chalamet by saying security had been beefed up because of angry ballet and opera fans, before jokingly adding, “They’re just mad you left out jazz.”

Furthermore, to seemingly add insult to injury, legendary ballerina Misty Copeland appeared on stage during a musical performance from Sinners, drawing significant attention in light of the controversy.

It seemed like a long and disappointing night for Chalamet at the Oscars, but he appeared to take it in stride, smiling and cheerfully posing for pictures throughout the event.
