Anne Hathaway will be back on the big screen with her upcoming musical drama, Mother Mary. The actress plays the title character, a global pop superstar. In a recent interview, she revealed the real-life pop icons who influenced her performance for the role.
Anne Hathaway cites Pink and Rosalía as inspirations for her role
While on a promotional run for the movie, which is scheduled to release on April 17, 2026, Hathaway stated that she looked into several musical tour documentaries to help her prepare for the role. She explained that she closely observed global pop icon Pink for certain nuances that she could incorporate into her character.
“I found a lot of tour documentaries to be really, really helpful. The first one I watched was Pink. The way she combines all aspects of herself—who she is as herself, who she is as an artist, who she is as a mom, and the way she is a boss, and how she leads with kindness—that was really meaningful to me,” she said.
There are a few documentaries that capture Pink’s larger-than-life stage presence, including P!nk: All I Know So Far, which chronicles her global tour and personal life. These projects highlight the intensity and physicality that have come to define her performances.
Furthermore, she stated that Spanish artist Rosalía’s performance style helped her get into the groove of dancing, which was an essential element for the role. “The artist that kind of shook me up and got me dancing was Rosalía.”
Meanwhile, David Lowery, the director of the film, cited Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour as one of the major inspirations for the project. In the same interview, he stated that he was fascinated by the scale of that tour.
“The scale of it. I’ve never seen anything that big before. It was just so immense. I could scarcely comprehend how one person could go stand in that spot, in front of all of those people, and perform in the way that she does. And part of my processing of that film was writing this one,” he stated.
The movie centers on Hathaway’s character, Mother Mary, as she navigates fame and her relationship with a fashion designer.
