There have been various speculations regarding nominations and eligibility for the prestigious Academy Awards. While some movies seem the perfect contenders in respective categories, others probably won’t make the cut for the Oscars next year. This is due to the fact that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has now put forth rules and regulations regarding the usage of artificial intelligence. Here’s how it could affect both actors and directors.
The Academy’s new rules and regulations for Oscar eligibility
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the official presenter for the Oscar awards, laid out the rubric of what will now be considered eligible for actors, directors and other crucial entities in filmmaking. Most notably, the professional organization, which comprises over 10,000 filmmakers, ruled out the use of generative AI when it comes to acting.
It stated that films where characters are “demonstrably performed by humans” will be considered eligible. If the submitted projects use generative AI, the Academy has the right to question the use and the nature of the film itself as stated in the clause of eligibility provided on its official website. The upcoming Oscars, which would be held in 2027, marks the ceremony’s 99th edition.
Moreover, it will also expand its horizon to regional non-English films as well. The only qualification most regional films require is if it bags a qualifying award in an International film festival, such as Cannes or Sundance. Coming back to the Academy’s AI crackdown, there have been several movies that have heavily employed the use of artificial intelligence tools.
These tools can be used to alter vocals, for landscape, to mimic late actors or to improve set designs. They can also put to work during screenplay writing process. The movies that can potentially be axed from the eligibility list have used AI in their production process. So far, there have been several debates about it.
For instance, the creators of As Deep As the Grave used AI to recreate the voice of Van Kilmer, who had passed away last year. The move stirred major controversy albeit everyone’s approval even including his own family’s. Further, the movie Bitcoin has done some serious cost cutting by artificially generating sets, backgrounds and filming layouts.
What would have costed the creators around $300 million has been brought down to mere $70 million with the help of AI. The Sweet Idleness, Critterz, and Uncanny Valley are some more examples of movies with high use of AI in their technical as well as production process. But that’s not all. While Academy banned the AI usage, it paved the way for actors.
It has introduced a new rule which allows actors to be nominated in individual categories with multiple nominations. So, don’t be shocked if you find Zendaya nominated in the same category for both Dune: Part Three and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. In a nutshell, Oscars’ new regulations and rules seem beneficial and most viewers have seemed to align with this idea. What is your take on the matter?
