Peter Jackson has officially confirmed that a sequel to The Adventures of Tintin is finally moving forward nearly 15 years after the original film released in theaters. The filmmaker announced the update during a masterclass event at the 79th Cannes Film Festival on May 13, 2026, where he also received an Honorary Palme d’Or. Jackson revealed that the project is now actively being written alongside his longtime creative partner and wife, Fran Walsh.
Tintin sequel confirmed as Peter Jackson makes the movie
During the Cannes film festival, Peter Jackson confirmed that he will be directing the Tintin sequel himself, thus fulfilling the original agreement he made with Spielberg when creating the franchise. While Spielberg directed The Adventures of Tintin in 2011, Peter Jackson served as producer.
Explaining the lengthy wait for the sequel, Jackson mentioned the initial deal he and Spielberg came up with. “There was a handshake deal that Steven directs one and I direct another,” he told the audience. “Steven did his film, then for 15 years later I haven’t made mine. I feel very awkward about that.”
Also, Jackson confirmed that writing is currently underway for the film. “We’ve been writing our Tintin script, me and my wife Fran Walsh,” Peter Jackson shared. “I’ve been writing it while I’m here at Cannes.”
As previously reported by THR, the new movie will focus on adapting two main storylines from Hergé’s original comics, The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun. Both connected stories feature Tintin and Captain Haddock investigating a mysterious disease that hits a few expedition members before going to South America to save Professor Calculus after his kidnapping.
As reported by THR, the 2011 film combined multiple elements of the original comics — The Secret of the Unicorn, The Crab with the Golden Claws, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. Despite critical acclaim and praise for the motion-capture animation, the movie failed to receive an immediate sequel as fans were expecting.
The Tintin sequel will also mark Peter Jackson’s return to filmmaking following several years of work on documentary movies. Indeed, over the last decade, the acclaimed director has worked on numerous documentaries including They Shall Not Grow Old and The Beatles: Get Back.
Similarly to the original movie, the Tintin sequel will also utilize motion-capture animation. The filming technique allows the actors to record their performances in physical form, which is then digitally converted into the visual style created by Hergé.
Speaking of the cast, it seems that the majority of original actors will make a comeback to reprise their roles. Specifically, Jamie Bell will likely play Tintin once again, while Andy Serkis will presumably join as Captain Haddock. Moreover, the actor and the director are currently collaborating on another project, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
No release date has been announced for the Tintin sequel yet.
