Netflix just dropped the trailer for the upcoming drama series Berlin and The Lady With an Ermine, which follows a heist of a Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece. The clip showed some fascinating details and plot reveals. Here are 5 things you may have missed in the trailer. Let’s unpack them!
5. The Pulp-Fiction reference
Right off the bat, we have the show playing Misirlou, which was sampled for Black Eyed Peas back in the 2000s. Now you may wonder how this is even relevant. Well, it’s the same track that was used in Pulp Fiction (1994), and here’s where things get interesting.
In the Tarantino film, the track plays in the opening scene just before a heist. So, this series follows the same blueprint as the iconic movie, using music to build and heighten the anticipation.
4. The Heist-ception
A heist within a heist sounds tricky, right? Well, Berlin (Pedro Alonso) is the one guy people can always expect to do the unthinkable, and this is exactly what he’s planning to do. His team was approached by the Duke of Málaga to bring back The Lady With an Ermine, but here’s where things get tricky!
The Duke is not one to be trusted, as he would gladly trample over anyone once the deed is done. To counter that, Berlin stages a heist to steal the da Vinci painting as a smokescreen for his true objective: a vengeful plot to ruin him.
3. Symbolism of the painting
The Lady With an Ermine is often considered a symbol of chastity, purity, and love, but it also carries several hidden meanings. They say that the Ermine would rather die than soil its fur, and more often than not, the Ermine is an allusion to the Duke himself.
The Duke cannot do the deed, so he would rather have Berlin play out the heist. It also brings in Renaissance themes of illusion, where Berlin would be the mastermind in this whole game, upstaging the heist and turning it into a potential robbery.
2. Money Heist’s formula and romance
Sensuality, passion, and romance take center stage against the backdrop of the heist story set in Seville. Quite ironic, right? While the painting symbolizes purity and chastity, the story subverts it by bringing back the steaminess that reminds you of the original Money Heist series. Except this time, it’s Berlin who is spearheading the heist.
1. Berlin’s love story parallels the Professor’s
The Professor’s (Sergio Marquina) love story was tumultuous. His affair turned into a full-fledged, serious relationship with Raquel Murrilo, aka Lisbon. In this series, Berlin follows the same suit, except this time he finds himself drawn to Candela, who seeks him out for help. She is a mysterious character whom Berlin finds enchanting.
We might see a potential affair in the background of the heist. All in all, the series features the old cast from Berlin (2023) and new additions. Expect explosions, fireworks, and more plot twists and reveals, but all we know for sure is that the series is building to high stakes.
Berlin and the Lady with an Ermine is slated for release on 15th May 2026.
