Michael Pennington, the acclaimed British stage and screen actor best known to global audiences for playing Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, has died at the age of 82. His passing was confirmed by his representatives following his death on May 7, 2026, at Denville Hall, the historic London care home dedicated to members of the theatrical profession.

While no cause of death was made public, Pennington’s passing was announced a few days after and has received tributes from many of the members of the theatrical and Star Wars worlds who celebrated his outstanding career that had spanned six decades.
Though many movie-goers knew about him because of his performance in Star Wars, it should be noted that Pennington gained popularity mainly through the work done in classical theater. He became part of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1964 and went on to become one of the greatest Shakespeare actors of the era.
During his time with the company, Pennington performed many difficult roles, which included Hamlet, Macbeth, King Lear, Henry V, Richard II, Coriolanus, and Mercutio. His performances in various British theater houses earned him great acclaim and resulted in Pennington being recognized as one of the Associate Artists of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
In 1986, Pennington joined with the director Michael Bogdanov to create the English Shakespeare Company. Their troupe toured globally and aimed to present large-scale productions of classical plays to a wider audience beyond the traditional British theater houses.
International viewers may recognize Michael Pennington for his performance as Moff Tiaan Jerjerrod in the iconic Star Wars film. He was in charge of overseeing the construction of the second Death Star and participated in one of the famous scenes alongside Darth Vader when the latter threatened him to complete the station before the Emperor’s arrival.
Despite his performance in Star Wars, the British legend played many other parts in movies and television shows that comprised over 70 titles. Apart from playing the role of Hamlet’s brother, he worked alongside Meryl Streep in The French Lieutenant’s Woman, later joining her in The Iron Lady to play the former Labour Party Leader, Michael Foot.
Among Pennington’s last appearances in films and TV series was in the sci-fi show Raised by Wolves, created by Ridley Scott. In the show, he voiced “The Trust” in five episodes released in 2022.
Michael Pennington leaves behind a legacy associated with Star Wars as well as a theatrical career of many years.
