Time and time again, filmmakers have worked through some really fascinating yet dark texts. One such filmmaker is Andy Serkis, who completely reshaped how we viewed Animal Farm. In reality, the film was deeply disturbing, and here’s everything we know so far!
Andy Serkis spills the beans on Animal Farm’s original plan
Andy Serkis recently spoke to Variety about his film Animal Farm, where he shed light on what it would look like if he were to conceptualize the movie in a live-action version. “If we made a live-action version, it would’ve been much darker, and I’m really glad that we decided to make it as an animation for young, inquiring minds.”
This isn’t a first, especially with how several works of literature were made palatable for kids. Take Gulliver’s Travels, for example, which wasn’t simply about his travels but also self-discovery and something inherently too profound for young readers to actually comprehend.
Not to mention, the book itself was R-rated, and to make it into a children’s book is a job well done! Animal Farm, on the other hand, is a rather hefty book.
This isn’t to say that it is hefty in terms of its content, no. Rather, it entails themes of revolution and freedom, but what stands truly horrifying is how the pigs become humans. The animals take control over their lives only to be betrayed by their fellow animals, that is, the pigs. They do so in order to break free from humans.
Pigs, in this case, remain a sign of betrayal, and it is interesting how Hayao Miyazaki overturns it in Porco Rosso. Both are social commentaries in more ways than one.
But the mere idea of doing a live-action version of it would give anyone the chills. It also adds to the disturbing image of animals being humanized and, in turn, adapting the corrupt principles into their lives.
What’s so fascinating about this entire idea is that George Orwell wrote this book in the 1940s. It was the time of a new age, a new era of development and human principles.
Serkis’ adaptation is an interesting take on Orwell’s literary masterpiece.
