After receiving critical acclaim for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Rooney Mara has appeared in several intense projects, including Carol and Lion. And she’s now going to take on another demanding role in Quest for Love, written and directed by Antonia Campbell-Hughes. Described as a “ruthless mother,” Mara’s character hints at a high-stakes drama. Read on to know more about the project!
Mara takes on a darkly subversive role in Quest for Love
According to Deadline, the movie follows a highly complex and “ruthlessly unsentimental” Maris (played by Mara), who grew up around her recently deceased father’s work on euthanasia. Maris doesn’t know whether she is truly capable of love, as she navigates a relationship with her estranged ten-year-old son, Maxy.
The duo lives in the scenic Marais neighborhood in Paris, with Maxy craving maternal affection that his mother struggles to provide. But there’s more to this story. The movie’s official synopsis reads: “Magnetic and funny, Maris easily draws people into her orbit, but her nocturnal habits hint at a dangerous violence that lurks beneath the surface.”
“Unlike his amoral mother, Maxy knows right from wrong—and he’s clever enough to use her tricks against her to survive. Maris reignites a relationship with Alex, a devoted old flame whose growing love for Maxy forces her to make a deadly choice between mother and son.”
Meanwhile, Mara is also serving as the movie’s executive producer, with WME Independent handling sales rights for North America while Hanway manages international sales. Quest for Love is being produced by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville of Wild Atlantic Pictures. The company has previously backed projects such as Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon and Saipan. As for Campbell-Hughes, she has written and will be directing this project.
In 2022, she made her feature directorial debut with the Irish thriller It Is in Us All. She wore multiple hats on the project, serving as a writer, director, and actor. The movie premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival and even won the Special Jury Recognition for Extraordinary Cinematic Vision. Developed as part of the joint Screen Ireland and Luxembourg Film Fund initiative, Quest for Love has yet to receive a release date.
