James Gunn, the co-CEO of the DC Studios, is helming the soft reboot of the DC Universe. Supergirl will set to be the second live-action installment in the reimagined universe after Superman, as Gunn looks to avoid the mistakes of the Zack Snyder era while carefully picking and executing his future projects. In a recent interview, he clarified that he would be discussing which characters and storylines from the DC Extended Universe will be part of the official canon of the DCU.
Gunn to address what’s canon from The Suicide Squad and Blue Beetle after Man of Tomorrow
Gunn recently revealed that he’s still figuring out what counts as canon from The Suicide Squad and Blue Beetle in the new DC Universe. He admitted he wants to revisit both films with a fresh perspective.
“I’ve been thinking about this a lot in regards to The Suicide Squad & Blue Beetle and I’ve been meaning to rewatch both with an eye towards that, knowing what I know now almost three years into the DCU (with a couple more years of scripts being actively filmed or created),” the DC Studios co-CEO said.
Gunn added that he will be making the final decision on the status of these films after the release of Man of Tomorrow. The project is the follow-up to the first live-action DCU film, Superman. “Maybe after MoT, Jenn [Jennifer Holland] & Steve [Steve Agee] & I can get together for a special couple podcasts to discuss,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee previously co-hosted Peacemaker: The Official Podcast with Gunn, which shed light on what is and isn’t canon episode by episode. Gunn is selectively carrying over elements from the old DCEU instead of opting for a hard reboot. The podcast allowed Gunn to break down and clarify canon in detail.
And now it seems the same format could be applied to bigger films. Gunn’s decision to keep these discussions until after Man of Tomorrow is likely because the universe will be more defined following the next installment in the Superman saga, making canon decisions easier.
Gunn and his partner, Peter Safran, are looking to implement fresh narratives and story arcs to counter superhero fatigue, and the duo is expected to be selective about what remains canon from the DCEU. Are you pumped to witness the new era of DCU?
