DC Comics’ series The Authority can be best described as refreshing and something that offers a unique perspective. While mostly loved by fans, there is upsetting news regarding its rumored movie. James Gunn won’t be moving forward with this project, and here’s everything you need to know about it!
James Gunn clears the air on directing The Authority
James Gunn, CEO of DC Studios, recently took to Threads, where he confirmed that he won’t be moving forward with this project. He said he won’t be directing the movie anymore, saying:
“I would have never had time to do this, and although I know this is a popular theory online, I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there, but more importantly, it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU, both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe someday. Not soon.”
Now, what the practical concerns might be, or what it might entail, Gunn did not reveal exactly. IT clearly did not align with DC’s structure, as he said, and some fans have even pointed that out.
How exactly? Well, The Authority doesn’t follow the ironclad rules of how a superhero story is usually written, and rather, it challenges those very norms. This is one of the reasons why most people gravitate to the offbeat ideas and notions that the story has to offer.
In fact, when the movie was announced in early 2023, many fans waited with bated breath for its release. The Authority is also one of the most underappreciated works by DC Comics.
From redefining heroism to portraying powerful individuals as morally and emotionally flawed characters, The Authority breaks several conventions, and it also includes how it approaches violence, per se.
It’s anything but your run-of-the-mill superhero series, and needless to say, the news had a plethora of responses from fans. While most fans appreciate Gunn’s decision not to go forward with the idea, others seemed bummed by the movie being scrapped for now.
What we do know as of now is that there is a possibility of The Authority being directed someday in the near future, and all fans have to do is wait for it!
