In the glittering neon world of Euphoria, the notion of “happily ever after” had never been more mythical. However, with the airing of Season 4, Episode 3, “The Battle of Paladin,” viewers got a look at what could have been a dream come true: the much-hyped wedding of Nate Jacobs and Cassie Howard.

Although the episode provided its usual glamorous “Capital G Glam” visuals and wedding style, the story took a terrifying turn into a suburban nightmare dubbed by many as the worst hour of TV in the entire series. Here is what made the wedding of Nate and Cassie so doomed from the very beginning.

A Marriage Built on Debt and Deception

In terms of finances, things were even bleaker than one might have guessed: it turns out that Nate (Jacob Elordi) is under huge pressure from the loan sharks trying to take him down, as he is desperately trying to save the company his father runs from the bankruptcy it faces. In order to finance Cassie’s ($50,000) demands for the flower arrangements, as well as her right-wing suburban luxury lifestyle, the couple turned to even more extreme actions, such as Cassie’s career move into adult content creation.

However, before the couple even started the festivities of the evening, it became clear that Nate was missing on the day of his own wedding. Meanwhile, Cassie is seen crying due to her social media insecurities, unable to focus on the person she is going to marry. The unforgettable night predicted by Sam Levinson was truly unforgettable.

The episode featured one of the last performances of Eric Dane, the actor who passed away back in February 2026. Appearing at the wedding, Cal Jacobs (played by Dane) had a noticeably slurred speech. Despite his illness, Dane portrayed his character with grace and dignity, reflecting reality as he fought ALS.

Cal’s appearance served as another sign that the trauma of the past followed Nate no matter how hard he tried to shake it off. The conversation with Jules (Hunter Schafer), who called out “Remember me?” at the wedding reception, proved that Nate could not escape the consequences of what happened in high school.

A Toxic Reunion

Perhaps, the most notorious event to happen during the episode happened after the wedding. Upon arriving back at their newly-wedded residence in the hideous stretch Hummer, the couple found out that they owed 500 thousand dollars to Naz, an investor.

Nate’s toes get hacked off as a “down payment” for the money his business cannot pay, making the marriage one of the most brutal and violent hours of TV: To top that off, during the fight, Cassie gets a broken nose, which symbolizes the breaking of both her nose and the carefully crafted life of glamor and luxury she worked so hard to achieve.

The wedding was not only an occasion to celebrate: it served as a reunion of the East Highland gang, which made the whole point even more tragic for the viewers since everyone in the group had grown so much individually yet remained estranged from each other.

Rue (Zendaya) was forced to leave early because of her “work” as an arms supplier between Laurie and the s—- club owner, Alamo. Meanwhile, Maddy (Alexa Demie), who managed to climb to the heights of Hollywood fame and fortune, was seen watching the celebration. She even went as far as to leave upon realizing that Cassie’s “dream life” is nothing but a suburban jail cell.

With the newly announced war with his creditors and with Rue having her own issues with the DEA in the end, the “Paladin” wedding effectively burned down the rest of the characters’ lives to ashes.

Euphoria Season 3 continues next Monday on HBO and Max.
