Netflix will be backing the live-action adaptation of the iconic anime Gundam franchise. The film is written and directed by Jim Mickle, and production has officially begun in Queensland, Australia. Furthermore, the streaming giant has also revealed the full cast of the movie.
Sydney Sweeney, Noah Centineo in leading roles
Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo have been confirmed as the leads for the movie. However, their exact roles are still under wraps. The rest of the ensemble has also been listed and confirmed by Netflix, and it includes Ida Brooke, Jason Isaacs, Javon Walton, Nonso Anozie, Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Michael Mando, Gemma Chua-Tran, and Oleksandr Rudynskyi.
The movie will feature an original story set in a large-scale space war. The live-action adventure will bring the iconic franchise to life with an original tale about rival mech pilots fighting each other in a decades-long war between Earth and space colonies.
“As shifting allegiances and a growing threat set them on a collision course with one another, they’re pulled into a high-stakes race across the stars that could define the fate of humanity. With awe-inspiring battles, intimate human emotion, and an epic cinematic scale, this is Gundam like it’s never been seen before,” the early description of the film reads, as reported by Netflix.
This is the first-ever live-action feature adaptation of Gundam. The anime dates back to 1979 and helped define the mecha genre globally. With the success of the live-action adaptation of One Piece, Netflix is taking another gamble on popular anime IPs.
The film is being produced by Legendary Pictures in partnership with Bandai Namco Filmworks. The sci-fi drama has no official release date yet and is currently in active production, with filming underway in Australia and casting announcements generating strong anticipation among fans worldwide for the ambitious project.
The franchise was originally created by Yoshiyuki Tomino, with Mobile Suit Gundam being the first installment. Are you excited about watching this politically and morally complex war drama where robots are military weapons and not superheroes? Let us know in the comments section below.
