Antony Starr is reprising the role of Homelander for the fifth and final season of The Boys. Although Starr had mentioned in previous interviews that portraying dark characters like Homelander is “fun” for him as an actor, there was a particular scene in the third season that the audience found disturbing. In a recent interview, he described what the production team wanted him to do for the infamous cow-milking scene.
Starr declined cow-milking lessons, saying he wanted to be “fresh” for the scene
In The Boys Season 3, Episode 7, Homelander visits a remote farm in a fragile mental condition. He awkwardly milks a cow and then sits down to drink the fresh, warm milk from a bucket, serving as an intensely perverse moment. The moment reinforces his obsession with milk in a deeply uncomfortable and disturbing way.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed that the production team wanted him to learn how to milk a cow, but he declined the invitation. He wanted to stay “fresh” because Homelander wouldn’t realistically know how to milk a cow, being far removed from working-class conditions because of his elevated status. As a result, Starr’s first-time experience milking a cow on set adds to the awkwardness of the scene.
“They wanted me to go two hours away for a cow-milking lesson. I declined the invitation… I wanted to be fresh on the day ’cause Homelander doesn’t know how to milk a cow,” he said. He further described the experience as disgusting, comparing the cow’s udders to “a little saggy man’s —”
“…But anyway, so we got there on the day—it’s disgusting. It feels like a little saggy man’s —,” he further stated.
Nevertheless, Season 5 of the show picks up after the fallout of the previous installment, with Homelander further consolidating his influence over the United States. In response, Starlight rises to organize resistance against his expanding control. At the same time, as The Boys remain fractured and barely holding together, Billy Butcher resurfaces with a strategic plan—one centered on unleashing a lethal virus designed to wipe out all Supes.
