Lee Cronin’s The Mummy was released last week, and it sure looks promising! It’s got gnarly moments, jump scares, and blood-curdling scenes that would leave horror fans wanting more, except there’s a problem. The film is now facing backlash, and here’s why!
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy faces backlash
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is currently facing backlash after the poster depicted the face of a child, as reported by Metro. The posters made their way into the subway trains and into the public eye, but that’s not it.
BBC Journalist and writer Samira Ahmed took to X to share her thoughts and opinions about the poster. She uploaded a post on 15th April, where she attached the poster and captioned it saying:
Just submitted my complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority about this poster ad at tube stations. Why is there so little consideration of the impact of such images on children? (And one might add, on bereaved parents).
There were some viewers of the opinion that they were completely averse to the idea of body horror inflicted on a child. Others were horrified by the entire idea of the mummification of the character.
While Ahmad’s concerns and complaints brought the parental advisory into this debate, it also reflected the aftermath and impact of such images on the young audience.
Overall, the reviews regarding the film itself have been pretty divisive. Most fans have praised the film for its use of stomach-churning elements. The film gets nasty, gory, and downright unsettling through its use of carnage.
Others, however, seem to think it falls short compared to his previous works, including The Evil Dead. The movie focuses on a family whose daughter goes missing, only to be reunited with her almost 8 years later. Newsflash? The reunion is anything but homely as they discover their child is now a vessel for demonic entities.
The movie stars Jack Reynor and Laia Costa in central roles. It has so far received an average score of 46% on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 6.1/10 on IMDb.
As of yet, Lee Cronin has yet to make a statement on the nature of the controversy so far.
Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
